What to Track for Plasterers & Dry Liners

Plasterers and dry liners carry out the internal finishing work that transforms a building shell into usable space. While the work may appear lower-risk than structural trades, plasterers and dry liners face specific compliance requirements around fire stopping, dust control, and manual handling that must be documented and managed.

Fire stopping is the most critical compliance area for dry liners. Plasterboard partitions, ceilings, and encasements often form part of the building's fire compartmentation — the system of fire-resistant barriers that prevents fire from spreading between compartments. Where services (pipes, cables, ducts) penetrate fire-rated partitions, the penetrations must be fire-stopped using tested and certified products. Every fire stop must be installed to the manufacturer's instructions and recorded. The Building Safety Act 2022 has strengthened the requirements for fire stopping records, particularly in higher-risk buildings.

Silica dust is a significant occupational health hazard for plasterers. Cutting and sanding plasterboard and cement-based renders generates respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust, which causes silicosis — an irreversible and potentially fatal lung disease. The Workplace Exposure Limit for RCS is 0.1 mg/m³. COSHH records must cover silica exposure, and wet cutting methods or dust extraction must be used wherever practicable. HSE has made silica dust enforcement a strategic priority in construction.

Manual handling is another key compliance area. Standard plasterboard sheets (2400mm x 1200mm) weigh approximately 22-30 kg depending on type and thickness. Handling these sheets repeatedly, particularly on stairwells and in restricted spaces, carries a high risk of musculoskeletal injury. Manual handling risk documentation must be in place, and mechanical handling aids should be used where possible.

The Finishing & Interior Association (FIA) represents dry lining and plastering contractors. On site, plasterers need CSCS cards, RAMS, insurance, and evidence of fire stopping competence for any fire-rated work.

Got questions?

Frequently Asked Questions — Plasterers & Dry Liners

What fire stopping documentation do dry liners need?

Dry liners working on fire-rated partitions, ceilings, or encasements must record every fire stop installation — including the product used, the manufacturer's tested detail, the penetration type, and the location. Fire stopping products must be third-party tested and certified. The Building Safety Act 2022 has strengthened these requirements, particularly for higher-risk residential buildings.

Is silica dust a health risk for plasterers?

Yes. Cutting and sanding plasterboard and cement renders generates respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust, which causes silicosis — an irreversible lung disease. The UK Workplace Exposure Limit is 0.1 mg/m³. COSHH records must cover silica exposure, and wet cutting or dust extraction must be used wherever practicable. HSE has made silica dust enforcement a strategic priority in construction.

What CSCS card does a plasterer need?

Plasterers need a Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card (NVQ Level 2 in Plastering or Dry Lining) or a Gold Advanced Craft card (NVQ Level 3). You must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Operatives test. Specialist dry liners working on fire-rated systems should also hold fire stopping competence certification.
