Overview

What Are Training Certificates (CSCS)?

CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) cards are the industry-standard proof that a construction worker holds a recognised qualification for their occupation and has passed the CITB Health Safety and Environment Test. Different card colours indicate different qualification levels — from green Labourer cards to gold Management cards. While not a direct legal requirement, CSCS cards are the primary way the construction industry demonstrates competence under the CDM Regulations 2015. Virtually every construction site in the UK requires CSCS cards for entry.

Why it matters

Why Training Certificates (CSCS) Matter

CSCS cards have become the universal site access requirement in UK construction. The Build UK Code of Practice requires all operatives on member sites to hold a valid CSCS card. Without one, workers cannot pass the site gate — regardless of their skills or experience. For contractors, ensuring every team member holds a valid card is essential for maintaining their workforce on active projects. Expired cards cause immediate disruption.

Frequently Asked Questions — Training Certificates (CSCS)

What types of CSCS card are there?

The main CSCS card types are: Green (Labourer, requires CITB test), Blue (Skilled Worker, requires NVQ Level 2+), Gold (Advanced Craft or Supervisory, requires NVQ Level 3+), Black (Manager, requires NVQ Level 6+), and White (Professionally Qualified Person). There are also Red cards for trainees and Provisional cards.

How do you get a CSCS card?

You need two things: a recognised qualification for your occupation (usually an NVQ or equivalent) and a pass in the CITB Health Safety and Environment Test. Apply through the CSCS website with proof of both. For basic Labourer cards, only the CITB test is required, but NVQ achievement is expected within a set timeframe.

What happens if a CSCS card expires while working on site?

If your CSCS card expires, you may be refused site access until you renew it. Renewal requires passing the CITB Health Safety and Environment Test again and proving your qualification is still valid. Plan renewal at least 3 months before expiry to avoid gaps in site access.
